Portrait of Eric True, founder of True-Fit Dental IOS

Eric True is the founder of True-Fit Dental IOS and your digital dental coach. The son of a dentist and lab technician, he has spent his life on both sides of a restoration: in the operatory, where the preparation and impression are made, and at the lab bench, where the crown has to fit. Today he brings that experience into dental offices, placing intraoral scanners and training whole teams in person, from first scan to final seat.

  • Son of a dentist
  • First gold crown at age 12
  • Own dental lab, 2001–2011
  • Working lead technician, 35-person lab, 2011–2016
  • Co-founder of Digital Dental Leaders; CEO, lead technician, lead designer and trainer since 2016
  • Founder, True-Fit Dental IOS

The True-Fit mission

True-Fit exists to change how dental intraoral scanners are sold, trained and used, so patients, practices and labs all succeed with more predictability.

That means raising the quality, and the value, of buying and using an intraoral scanner.

Raised in Dentistry

Eric grew up around dentistry and lab work. His father, Dr. Stephen True, was a dentist, and Eric made his first gold crown at age 12.

Before he ran a lab of his own, Eric spent 10 months chairside as a dental assistant and years working in his father’s office. He saw dentistry from the doctor’s side, with the pressure and anxiety a dentist carries on every case, and from the patient’s side: the time taken off work and the nerves that come with sitting in the chair. He learned early that getting it right lowers the stress for everyone in the room.

Earning the Trust of the Dentist

In 2001 Eric started his own dental lab and ran it until 2011. From 2011 to 2016 he was the working lead technician over a 35-person lab. He oversaw the lab, did the work himself at the bench, and trained the other technicians.

That lab produced high-end restorations for ten nearby dentists, and those dentists consistently asked for Eric. He also worked closely with the lab’s on-site dental practice, which specialized in crown and bridge, full-mouth dentistry and All-on-X.

Going Digital

In 2015 Eric co-founded Digital Dental Leaders (DDL), a digital-only dental lab in Menifee, California. For that first year, while DDL was just getting started, Eric was still the working lead technician at the 35-person lab, and overseeing DDL’s business development. Since 2016 he has served full time as DDL’s CEO, lead technician, lead designer and trainer. DDL has grown to a team of about 50.

Eric helped write DDL’s digital training cases and curriculum, digital workflows and case checklists with input from his father, Dr. Stephen True, before he passed away. Across his career, his work has spanned single unit crown and bridge, implant abutments and full-arch cases.

Eric’s passion is to help dental practices be successful and patients be cared for with the quality, cost and delivery of their restorations.

Teaching the Scan with the Restoration in Mind

Years at the bench showed Eric where restorations succeed and where they struggle. Most of the time it comes down to the preparation, the scan, and clear communication between the office and the lab.

Because he understands anatomy, form, function and tooth preparation, Eric teaches digital impressions with the finished restoration in mind: what the lab needs to see, why it matters, and how to capture it well the first time. When the prep and the scan are right, the doctor doesn’t have to guess when the crown comes back, and the patient feels the difference.

True-Fit Dental IOS

That is the idea behind True-Fit Dental IOS. Eric helps each practice choose the intraoral scanner that fits its cases and budget, from the AlliedStar AS 260 and AlliedStar Sensa to the Straumann SIRIOS X3, with expert hands-on training included. He handles delivery and support, then trains the whole team in person, in their own office, on their own cases, and stays with them from the first scan to the final seat. After the sale, questions go to Eric, not a call center.

True-Fit and DDL share the same standard: True-Fit is scanning you can trust, and DDL is restorations you can trust. Practices are welcome to send their cases to DDL or to any lab they choose; their scanner, training and support are the same either way. Eric trains in Southern California, and visits Texas and South Carolina by request.

Why He Does It

Eric’s goal is simple to say and hard to do: to be the best intraoral scanner trainer an office can find anywhere. He believes he can offer practices a service they can’t get anywhere else, and he is building it one practice at a time, trusting God with where it goes.
